AFTERCARE

A fresh tattoo is effectively a wound, so it's important to keep it clean in order to avoid infection. Below is a summary on how to heal your new tattoo how I suggest. Whilst this is how I recommend you take care of your tattoo, if you’ve tried other ways that work well with your body then I welcome you to stick to that. Think of your aftercare as a necessary and important process when getting a new tattoo.

Wet Heal

After your tattoo is complete, I will wrap your tattoo, and I recommend you leave this on until the next morning.

I will supply you with the necessary dressing to cover you over the next couple of days.

The next morning, take the wrap off and dispose of it. Have a shower and give your tattoo a wash- preferably with some unscented, natural soap and warm water.

After you’re done, let the tattoo air dry to avoid any unwanted fluff on the fresh tattoo before covering it again with the wrap provided until the next morning.

In the morning, repeat this process, wrapping it again until the next morning.

The tattoo is essentially wrapped for 2 days after your appointment, changing the dressing twice.

On the 3rd morning after your appointment you will once again wash the tattoo and let it air dry, however after this you will not cover it again. Instead, leave it for an hour or 2 before using a light coating of moisturiser as the tattoo dries out. From there you’ll cream it 2-3 times a day for the next 2 weeks. The skin should flake away over this period, leaving your fully healed tattoo underneath.

For cream I recommend Palmers Cocoa Butter or any other aftercare we offer at the shop.

Dry Heal

I’ll wrap your tattoo after we’ve completed, leave this on for a couple of hours before taking it off and disposing of it.

Have a hot shower and give your tattoo a wash preferably with some unscented, natural soap and warm water.

After you’re done, let the tattoo air dry to avoid any unwanted fluff on the fresh tattoo. For the first night only, you will need to re-wrap your tattoo in the dressing supplied, avoiding any ink loss on your bed sheets.

In the morning, have another shower and let your tattoo air dry before getting dressed.

From here, you will leave it uncovered and only start creaming it from day 3. Your tattoo should be feeling ‘tight’ when you apply the moisturiser, and little flakes should be appearing by the time you apply the cream for the first time.

From then, you apply a light layer of cream 2-3 times a day for the next 2 weeks. The skin should flake away over this period, leaving your fully healed tattoo underneath.

For cream I recommend Palmers Cocoa Butter or any other aftercare we offer at the shop.

FAQs

What is the booking process?

Fill in a booking form on the website with as much detail as you can.

Once we’ve taken a look through your enquiry, if it’s something Jake feels he is able to work with then you’ll be contacted regarding if a consultation will be needed or not before we proceed any further.

If a consultation is needed, ideally they are face to face. However, if you are travelling from far, then we can arrange for it to be via phone call. During the consultation we’ll discuss your ideas and make a rough plan for your project, as long as everyone is on the same page by the end of the consult, you’ll then make a booking and pay your deposit.

Jake will send a rough mock up of his ideas typically a week out from your appointment via email. This design will be based off what has been discussed during the initial inquiry and consult. When choosing to book in with Jake you are agreeing to allow a certain amount of creative freedom, so it’s important to get your ideas clearly across before booking in. However, difficulties in reaching an agreement on the design after discussing ideas and granting artistic license depending on the timing and feasibility, may result in the cancellation or rescheduling of your appointment. Decisions regarding changes to design are made on a case-by-case basis.

From there, on the day of your appointment you will then see your design fully rendered and complete before you begin!

Jake retains the right to decline tattoo requests that do not align with his artistic style and interests.

How much do you charge? How long will the tattoo take?

If price is a big factor, there are occasionally ways to make a design take a little less time to tattoo. Make sure you are open and honest with both Jake and yourself before choosing to undertake a big financial commitment such as this.

After you’ve submitted your enquiry, you will be contacted with Jake’s current rates and a rough time frame estimate for completion. Each tattoo's duration and the number of sessions required will vary. Numerous factors influence the time needed, including skin type and condition, the size of the canvas, tolerance to sitting for extended periods, skins reaction to tattooing, and scheduled breaks during the session. As humans, unforeseen circumstances can arise, so it's essential to consider these factors.

Below is a basic guideline regarding Jake’s hours and the estimated completion time for a tattoo. Please note that these figures are general estimates and may vary based on the size of the canvas.

Daily working hours:
10:00 am - 6:00 pm

Please be aware that these times are subject to change depending on the day's requirements. If any adjustments are necessary, Jake will communicate them accordingly.

Guideline to completion of tattoo:
Arm sleeve: 6-7 Sessions
Leg Sleeve: 8-10 Sessions
Torso panel: 6-8 sessions
Back panel: 6-8 sessions
Back & bum: 8-10 Sessions (anything further will be discussed directly with Jake.)
Hands/feet: 1 session per panel
Neck/Throat: 2-3 sessions
Head or other: Discuss directly with Jake.

How does the deposit work? How much is it?

A deposit of $300 is required for each day you book and will need to be paid via bank transfer. On the day of your appointment your deposit for that session will be used plus the remaining balance that will be paid in cash. When booking multiple sessions, multiple deposits will be required. Deposits are non-refundable.

Deposits are only accepted via bank transfer, while the remaining balance must be paid in cash on the day of your appointment.

How do I potentially lose my deposit?

If you don’t show up to an appointment or if you realise you can’t make the appointment and give Jake less that 72 hours notice. Bear in mind, if you’re losing your sessions’ deposit, Jake is losing an entire days work. Your deposit may be moved once to a later appointment date with at least 72 hours notice prior to the appointment time.

Multiple reschedules will result in you forfeiting your deposit.

How do I book if I am overseas or interstate?

The process is the same but we can do a phone call instead of a face to face consultation. If you’re travelling far, you must take into consideration the extra expenses and effort involved on your end. Take that into consideration before you commit.

Do you allow numbing cream?

No, Jake will not tattoo you if you arrive to your appointment wearing numbing cream. He feels the quality of work suffers as a result due to many factors. That being said, he does have some mild numbing spray which is occasionally used in the latter part of the day to help get through longer sessions. If you wish to discuss the subject further it will need to be discussed with Jake directly, before your appointment.

How long does it take for a sleeve?

This entirely depends on your tattoo subject matter, pain tolerance, body size, and design complexity. Yes, that IS a lot of things. This is why it’s hard to offer a concrete number required for ‘an average sleeve’. As a rough idea, a full sleeve can take anywhere from 6 to 7 full day bookings.

Where are you located? Is there parking?

The studio Jake works out of is;
Lighthouse Tattoo
1 Pemberton Street
Botany
NSW
2019

There’s plenty of free street parking close to the shop such as Tupia Street or surrounding streets. There is also a bus stop right across the road so you won’t have any dramas getting here.

The studio is a bit inconspicuous from the outside, when you arrive at the address on the day you’ll see a big white building with a brown wooden door and a small plaque of a lighthouse on it. That’s us!

If you have any problems finding us, feel free to call the shop on (02) 9316 4565.

What should I do to prepare for my appointment?

Get a decent nights sleep the night before.

Drink plenty of water.

Moisturise the area 1 week prior to getting tattooed (not on the morning of your tattoo).

Refrain from drinking alcohol the night before.

Have a good breakfast beforehand.

Don’t shave the area: this can cause unwanted rashes or cuts prior to the appointment. Jake will do this before your appointment. If you are working on a particularly hairy area and you would like to assist beforehand, feel free to use clippers to trim the area instead.

Come alone to your appointment. We work in a creative environment and like to keep the experience between the artist and their client without any unnecessary distractions.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Remember to bring water and any other drinks or sugary snacks you may want throughout the day.

We have a fridge you are welcome to use to store your lunch, however you’re also welcome to go out for lunch as there are plenty of options close by.

Some people prefer to find their comfort zone with music, you are welcome to bring along headphones.

For extra comfort you can also bring your own pillow if you’d like.

Do you plan on travelling overseas or interstate?

Jake always enjoy travelling and working in other places, if you’re interested in getting work off him, feel free to send an email to see if he’s planning a trip soon to wherever you’re allocated. Otherwise, we can highly recommend a trip to Sydney!

I really want to get tattooed by you, but I don’t know what to get?

You can find Jake’s ‘wanna do’ pieces in his highlights on Instagram which will often be updated with new ideas. Alternatively, you can email and ask if Jake has any rough plans that he’s been working on that he would be happy to share with you.
